MAC Call Me Bubbles Makeup Tutorial

The Starlet Limited-Edition Makeup Vanity by Tarte

16 Nov

The Starlet Limited-Edition Makeup Vanity

Price: $52 USD/ $68 CAN ($505 retail value per tarte)

This holiday season, tarte is launching The Starlet Limited-Edition Makeup Vanity.  The mirrored vanity contains six eye shadow quads, a sample of their mascara and lash primer, bronzer, two blushes and a highlighter.  The contents have me covered for a range of looks from natural to smoky and dramatic:

Top tier:

  • Traditional Smoky Eye
  • Celebrity (deep shimmering gray)
  • Superstar (deep shimmering silver)
  • Luminary (silver frost)
  • Opening night (sparkling black)
  • Earthy
    • Talent (shimmering peach)
    • Idol (matte taupe)
    • Cameo (matte beige)
    • Virtuoso (sparkling forest green)
  • Plum Smokey Eye
    • Stardom (blackened plum)
    • Icon (warm lilac)
    • Major (shimmering plum)
    • Siren (shimmering deep mauve)
  • Blues
    • Fame (shimmering cobalt)
    • Big Break (shimmering ice blue)
    • V.I.P. (shimmering blue-silver)
    • Toast (shimmering toasted beige)

    Second tier:

    • Browns
    • Popular (shimmering golden beige)
    • Timeless (shimmering cocoa)
    • Prestige (matte ochre)
    • Trophy (shimmering golden brown)
  • Pinks
    • Ingénue (matte baby pink)
    • Prima Donna (shimmering cinnamon)
    • Leading Lady (shimmering nude pink)
    • Diva (shimmering dusty rose)
  • Sample of the multiplEYE™ Natural Lash Enhancing Primer
  • Sample of the Lights, Camera, Lashes! Clinically-proven Natural Mascara
  • Bottom tier:

    • Park Avenue Princess Mineral Powder Bronzer
    • Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush
    • Glory (shimmering peach)
    • Starlet (shimmering rose)
  • Amazonian Clay Shimmering Powder in Rose (soft petal pink)
  • As a fan of frost/shine/shimmer on the lids but preference for matte shadows for the crease the kit’s eye shadows cover all of those bases.  My favorite “quads” from the vanity are the Traditional Smoky Eyes and Blues and now that I think of it, the Blues set of shadows could be used to recreate the look in my Holiday Blues makeup tutorial.  A small number of the shadows blend right into my skin color but I could use those as a highlight color or to blend out a dark crease.  The vanity also gets bonus points for including tarte’s very popular amazonian clay blushes and park avenue princess bronzer that gives a pretty bronze glow to the cheeks.  Once you are done with the makeup, you can remove the inlays and convert the vanity into a jewelery box.  I loved mirrored furniture in bedrooms but it is so expensive.  A mirrored vanity/jewelry box is like a baby step towards my dream mirrored dresser.  Overall I think this vanity is a great deal for the price and would be a great gift for the makeup lover on your holiday gift list.

Review: Definicils Precious Cells Mascara by Lancome

    21 Aug

I wanted to share how great my lashes look after a dose of Lancôme’s Définicils Precious Cells Mascara.  I first encountered the mascara when I received a sample at a blogger event last year.  Since then I have repurchased it, becoming one of my go to mascaras for those occasions where I want some extra drama.  It makes my lashes stand out against a smoky eye without the need for false lashes.  If you think I am slow at applying my mascara you do not even want to know how long it takes me to apply a pair of falsies (hence why I always cut that step out of my tutorials).  I love anything that will get me to skip that step.

    Makeup Tutorial: Summer Romance

    7 Jun

    Summer Romance Makeup Tutorial

June is here, which means that wedding season is in full swing.  I wore the wedding-worthy look above in the haul video I filmed for The Makeup Show and so many of my viewers requested it that I had to give you a tutorial.

    Bridal adjustments

For a daytime ceremony, I would keep the eye liner thin and as close to the lash line as possible since I prefer a more natural look.  Right before an evening reception add another layer of liner and smoke it out as demonstrated in the video.  Speaking of liners, make sure to use a waterproof version unless you are going for Beyonce in the video for Why Don’t You Love Me?  P.S. You shouldn’t!  Just to be safe top the smoked out liner with a charcoal gray shadow for extra staying power and dimension.

This look would work for a guest as well and while we are at it, why limit this look to a wedding?  It would be a great look to keep in your arsenal for any other special occasion such as a birthday, prom or graduation party.

    Tutorial: Return of the Favorites

    7 May

I cannot help what I like.  I finally figured out a new setup that I wanted to try for filming and decided to record a tutorial to test it out.  The result was a look reminiscent of what I always wear.  Hence the name “Return of the Favorites.”  Satin Taupe and Rule eye shadows frequently work their way into most of the looks I do off-camera, which means that they will go with almost everything you wear.  Just switch the bottom liner to your standard black or another bright color that contrasts your outfit and you are good to go.

Check out the list of products I used to get the look above:

    Face

    • Face Atelier Ultra Foundation – #6 and #7
    • MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer – NW20
    • MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural – Medium

    Cheeks

    • Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Bronzing Makeup Base (aka Bronze Universal)
    • Inglot Blush – #30

    Eyes

    • MAC Eye Shadow – Satin Taupe, Brule, Sketch, Rule
    • Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes- #11L
    • Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Liner – Black Ink

    Lips

    • MAC Lipstick – Brave New Bronze (limited edition)
    • MAC Kissable Lipcolour – Woo Me (limited edition)

Viewer Tips: Missed out on Brave New Bronze?  Try Cherish Lipstick by MAC (via ameritrini) or Honolulu Honeyby NARS (via MadameBeautiful).  Top them with a clear gloss or C-Thru lipglass.

Review: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils

    11 Apr

    Urban Decay

    24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils

    (with flash)

Colors on the left (from top to bottom): Midnight Cowboy, Narc, Clinic, Barracuda, Wasteland, Mercury

Colors on the right (from top to bottom): Clash, Delinquent, Morphine, Lit, Sin, Rehab

Can one have to many eye pencils/shadow bases in one’s life?  Of course not!  I was at Sephora recently and spotted Urban Decay’s new 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils.  After spending some time trying the different colors, I was impressed with the color payoff and staying power.  If you want to blend these pencils you have to do it quickly, because once it sets you won’t be able to move it anywhere without anything short of a makeup remover.  Most of the pencils swatched smoothly; Midnight Cowboy was a little bumpy because of its glittery-ness.

After a lengthy deliberation I picked up Morphine and Clinic.  Morphine is a cool lavender shade that brightens up my eyes so much it looks neon (if there is such a thing as neon lavender).  To break out of my lack of green eye shadow rut, I chose Clinic – I loved the shiny metallic finish and deepness in tone perfectly suited for a colorful smokey eye.

Check out some suggestions on how to try the pencils below:

    • Liner – while you won’t get a thin line with these pencils (unless a little trickery is involved*) the thicker line is a good jumping off point for a smokey eye.  Choose a dark color, line your upper and lower lash lines, then blend away.  Because of the setting time with these particular pencils, apply and blend immediately on one eye before starting on the second.  Pencil in one hand, brush in the other and go.
    • All over lid color -  pick up one of the brighter colors for your lid area, pile on the mascara (add some lashes for extra credit) to balance the eye and keep the rest of your look in neutral territory.  The result will be a look that will be on trend this spring/summer.  Check out the beauty look from the Christian Dior RTW Spring 2o11 collection for inspiration (skip the red lip to make it wearable, or go for it - you only live once!).
    • A base to make your existing shadows pop -  You can layer a shadow over a pencil of a similar color or over the black liner (Barracuda) to deepen a metallic jewel tone eye shadow.  In addition to intensifying colors,  layering is key to helping your eye looks last all day.

    Tutorial: Rockin’ MAC’s Paparazz-She

    3 Mar

Hello orange!  The video above is for those looking for another way to wear Paparazz-She Mega Metal Shadow from MAC’s limited edition Peacocky collection.  Don’t have Paparazz-She? No sweat, MAC’s Amber Lights eye shadow gives me the Paparazz-She feeling without leaning towards traffic cone territory.  I drew inspiration from RuPaul‘s fabulous makeup in the promo for RuPaul’s Drag Race.  I can’t get over how great he looks in drag!  RuPaul never disappoints me with his makeup.  Definitely makes me want to step my game up.
