Photo Diary: Coachella 2012

20 Apr

Last weekend I went to Coachella, a 3-day long music festival in Indio, California.  Despite the difficulties that came with camping for the first time and extreme weather conditions, the weekend was a blast and full of singing and dancing my heart out.  I discovered new music and could talk to you for hours about the moments that left me laughing hysterically and shaking my head (but I’ll save those for my vlog).  It all culminated with the confirmation of a rumor that has been going on for years…Tupac is alive!  During the Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre set, a hologram of Tupac made an appearance but I bet you couldn’t tell half of the people in the audience that it wasn’t really him.  Watching the Tupac hologram perform was insane/cool/creepy all at the same time.  The Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre set was immediately legendary and the best of the weekend.  Check out some of my favorite snaps of the festival below:

P.S.  I am currently obsessed with Childish Gambino, Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, all of which performed at Coachella.

Musing of the Day: Dressing Like Kanye West

Kanye WestKanye West

@ 2011 CFDA awards

Recent reports of Kanye West working on a womenswear collection scheduled to debut on October 1st at Paris Fashion Week finally made sense of his recent affinity for women’s shirts, most notably a Celine iteration he wore while performing at Coachella this year—at least that is how I am rationalizing it.  I mean I have heard of “method acting” so one could attribute these choices to what I am calling “method designing.”  While I can’t pull off a casually unbuttoned blouse every day, I can get into what he wore to this year’s CFDA awards.

I would swap what look like Stubbs & Wootton navy slippers for a pair with a dash of leopard print.  Sam Edleman and Steven by Steven Madden are carrying similar styles, but my money is on Sam Edleman’s version with a padded footbed.  And have you seen the Alexander McQueen velvet loafers with the skulls?  Those would definitely be “ballerific.”

Luckily I already have the arm candy (I am officially on the layered bracelet bandwagon) plus the jeans and a white tee.  All that is left to complete my ode to Yeezy is a crisp white blazer instead of what appears to be ivory.  Kanye would not be proud if I did not make it my own.

P.S. I am still laughing at Kanye’s quote I saw on the Telegraph article about Lindsay Lohan’s brief stint at Ungaro: “Did you not see the Lindsay and Ungaro collection? That was 9/11 for celebrities doing fashion. After that I thought: ‘Well I can’t do a line now’. “  Team Kanye forever! Ha ha ha.  Luckily he has gotten over the trauma.  I can’t wait to see images of his collection.  He better bring it!

Musing of the Day: Aaliyah

25 Aug

Can’t believe it has been 10 years since Aaliyah‘s tragic death.  Today I was thinking about when I was in elementary school and started getting into MTV and music videos.  I remember the first Aaliyah video I ever saw.  It was “One in a Million” and from then on I was hooked.  Besides Aaliyah’s catchy music I was obsessed with her style.  I switched from parting my bangs down the middle to side-swept bangs.  And for someone who cannot get enough of skinny jeans these days it is funny to think that I begged my mom for a pair of baggy jeans.  I was terrified of asking my parents for anything when I was a kid so it was a pretty big deal.  She took me to a store called Cookies, which is in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, and I went to the boys section to get the jeans I needed to emulate her look.  I was so excited to wear them to school!  Today I keep away from the jeans.  However, I am still rockin’ the side-swept bangs and developed an interest in her makeup (of course).  My favorite makeup is the purple smoky eye paired with red lips in her “We Need a Resolution” video.  Who says you can only play up one of your features at a time?  She definitely pulled it off.

Even though Aaliyah is no longer with us she is still living on through her music.  Many years later, I still stop and listen to it whenever her songs pop up on my iPod.

The Look: Christina Aguilera @ 2010 MTV Movie Awards – Performance

Christina Aguilera

2010 MTV Movie Awards – Performance

Chritina’s makeup changed from warm to cold when she took the stage at the awards show.  She swapped golden brown lids for a silvery ones paired with a gray cut crease.  Check out how celebrity makeup artist, Kristopher Buckle, achieved the look:

For Christina’s eyes, Kristopher defined the crease and around the lash line with Armani Maestro Eye Shadow in #38, a charcoal shade. The intense silver shine topping Christina’s lids was Ombre Magnétique in Urban Silver, a brand new gel-like shimmer shadow coming from Lancôme this fall. (Stay tuned for more details!) Lancôme’s Artliner in Noir and mega coats of Hypnôse Drama Mascara in Excessive Black finished the dramatic eye look.

Christina’s lips—already a gorgeous red, thanks to Lancôme’s Color Design Matte in Red Haute—got a dramatic coat of shine with Color Fever Gloss in Mercury Rising, a sumptuous red shade.

The Look: Christina Aguilera @ 2010 MTV Movie Awards – Red Carpet

Christina Aguilera

2010 MTV Movie Awards – Red Carpet

Christina Aguilera rocked a glamorous fresh-faced look at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards.  Warm golden lids paired with a pop of red on the lips is one of my go-to looks for special occasions, especially during the spring and summer seasons.  Celebrity makeup artist, Kristopher Buckle, shared how he created the look:

The mission, says Kristofer, was to give Christina “perfect ivory skin and strong bone structure” to highlight her bold and classic red lip. To start, Kristofer prepped the skin with Lancôme’s new Teint Idole Fresh Wear Foundation in Bisque and Maquicomplet Complete Coverage Concealer in Ivoire (a makeup artist favorite). For the eyes, Kristofer swept YSL Ombre Solo Smoothing Effect Eyeshadow in #2 Cashmere Brown along the crease. Three coats of Hypnôse Drama Mascara in Excessive Black topped the upper lashes and one light coat coated the lower lashes.

For Christina’s glam red pout, Kristofer first lined with Lancôme’s Le Lipstique Lipcolouring Stick in Rougelle, a sheer red liner. Color Design Matte Lipstick in Red Haute delivered the rich dose of red—perfect for the iconic pop star.

Mid-Afternoon Break: May 6th, 2010

Had lunch at Schnippers again with the bf this time. I had some yummy mac and cheese and he had a bacon cheeseburger with a side of mac and cheese. I know, crazy, like the bacon cheeseburger isn’t one heart attack, but he is one of those people that can eat anything and not gain a pound.

Someone on Twitter asked me today what kind of diet I was on and I replied (more…)

Behind the Music

9 Jun

So you may be wondering why I am including music in my blog.

There are 3 reasons:

  1. In a fashion show its not just about the clothes, the shoes, the accessories, the makeup and the hair. There is also music. Its the soundtrack. Its the context. They all have to click.
  2. YouTube won’t let me put music in my videos so I need some place to share my favorite jams.
  3. Its my prerogative.

And speaking of my prerogative check out one of my favorite songs. I have to throw it down in the club when this comes on. Its a throwback (hint: its a song by a group sanz Bobby Brown). (more…)
