Review: Definicils Precious Cells Mascara by Lancome

21 Aug

I wanted to share how great my lashes look after a dose of Lancôme’s Définicils Precious Cells Mascara.  I first encountered the mascara when I received a sample at a blogger event last year.  Since then I have repurchased it, becoming one of my go to mascaras for those occasions where I want some extra drama.  It makes my lashes stand out against a smoky eye without the need for false lashes.  If you think I am slow at applying my mascara you do not even want to know how long it takes me to apply a pair of falsies (hence why I always cut that step out of my tutorials).  I love anything that will get me to skip that step.

Check out some of Lancome’s highlights:  (more…)

Polished: Flip Flop Fantasy by China Glaze

4 Aug

China Glaze

Flip Flop Fantasy Nail Lacquer

For my birthday/summer vacation in Dominican Republic I wanted crazy nails that screamed summer.  I chose China Glaze’s Flip Flop Fantasy nail lacquer, a neon coral/pink with a flat finish.  The polish glowed while I was drying my nails in one of those contraptions with a fan and a UV light making it club/rave approved, none of which I would be taking part in on my trip.  The manicure was accented with an acrylic bow that was my first foray into 3D nail art.  I could have done without the bow but it was fun to try something different with my nails.  Besides it is not like tricked out fluorescent nails are work appropriate, which is funny because I am actually still wearing them at work (minus two nails but we will get to that later).

If you are wondering if those wonderful long nails are mine the answer is yes, as in yes I paid for them.  I made an appointment for a Valley Nail Set at Valley NYC in Soho and it turned out that they use Dashing Diva’s Virtual Nails.  The same exact nails, glue and everything, down to the packaging.  I had gotten Virtual Nails at Dashing Diva many times before and they are similar to those press on nails that you can find at drugstores except that they come in a wide range of sizes, are custom fitted and glued on to your nails.  They last two weeks or even longer in my experience.  I used to swear by them until the last time I got them done at Dashing Diva.  I had them for no longer than two weeks and when they were removed (through soaking them off in a nice pool of acetone) all of my natural nails had a healthy tinge of green.  Basically I got nail fungus and it was not pretty.  Thankfully each nail was not entirely covered and it grew out quickly.  It is not fair to judge their Virtual Nails from one bad experience after countless successful ones, but one bad nail fungus can scar you for life.  As you can imagine, I was not exactly thrilled to see Virtual Nails at Valley but I decided to go through with it anyway.  After all it is more about proper application than the nails themselves.  I was happy with my nail technician Karen who did a great job fitting, applying, trimming and shaping the nails.  It is really important that the Virtual Nails fully adhere to your natural nails.  If they start to lift around the edges within a few days, get them removed immediately.  Once moisture gets trapped between your nail and the virtual nail you will have a prime breeding ground for fungus.  The lifting happened to me that last time at Dashing Diva and instead of having the nails removed right away, I waited until the two weeks were up.  Learn from my mistakes and do not let it happen to you.

It has been a week and a half since my service at Valley and I am happy with my nails besides the two that are missing.  I lost one nail trying to organize the fridge in the room at my grandmother’s house where my fiancé was staying.  A gallon of water slipped out of my hand and broke a nail in the process.  One of my uncles usually stays in there when he visits and why he would put a full size refrigerator in a bedroom is beyond comprehension.  I was furious for a few minutes since I had to trim the remainder of the nail and walk around with nine long nails and one short one.  I take nail symmetry very seriously.  The second victim did not infuriate me as much since it happened on my way back home.  I do not even know where I lost it, which is kind of hilarious to me/horrifying for the person who finds it.  Some minimal lifting is happening around the edges because of hanging out in the beach and pool at the resort but that was to be expected.  I need to make time to have them removed stat!

Skin Care: Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair Moisturizer and Eye Treatment Review

    17 Jun

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Repair Moisturizer and Eye TreatmentJuice Beauty

Stem Cellular Repair Moisturizer and Eye Treatment

A few months ago I was researching a new line of organic skin care products to test when, coincidentally, I received an invitation for the launch of Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Repair Moisturizer and Eye Treatment.  Since I dabble in believing in destiny, attending to see what these products were all about was the only logical thing to do.

Karen Behnke, the founder of Juice Beauty, gave a presentation highlighting what made Juice Beauty and their new Stem Cellular line special.  It contains a proprietary blend of fruit stem cells and other ingredients to repair, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and hydrate the skin.  Instead of using traditional fillers such as water or petroleum (aka petroleum jelly/Vaseline), Juice Beauty uses over 30 organic juices from fruits like apples, lemons and grapes that are rich in powerful antioxidants as a base for their products.  Antioxidants are music to my ears, because even though I don’t get much sunlight I am still exposed to an environment tinged with the negative effects of urban life.  I need all I can get to prevent signs of premature aging, just in case my genes favored my father’s wrinkly side of the family.

There were some very remarkable before and after photographs on display at the event that showed a dramatic improvement in the appearance of lines and wrinkles.  The clinical results were just as impressive:

A Clinical Analysis was conducted by an independent laboratory, following FDA regulations for dermatological clinical testing including measurement of 3D silicone replicas, corneometer instrumentation measurement, scientific analysis of photographs, and post treatment questionnaire analysis, all conducted by a Ph.D. Principal Investigator.

Clinically validated results (in just 6 weeks):

36% reduction in length and depth of lines and wrinkles

44% decrease in number of fine lines & wrinkles

75% improved elasticity of the skin

88% reduction in appearance of lines and wrinkles

88% improved skin tone & luminosity

96% noticeable improvement in the fine lines & wrinkles

    100% improved hydration

Uneven skin tone and dryness were my skin gripes at the time so I added these products to my morning skin care regimen for the rest of the winter and spring:

    Skin care routine

Every morning after cleansing with a gentle face wash, I apply a generous amount of the Stem Cellular Repair Moisturizer.  A little goes a long way but my skin has been feeling dryer than usual this year so I have been going for 1.5 pumps, concentrating on my non-existing laugh lines.  Next, I apply the eye treatment where the focus is my imaginary crow’s feet.  Why am I targeting areas that don’t have any problems yet?  Prevention I tell you! Prevention!

    Testing highlights

Smells amazing – I am EXTREMELY sensitive when it comes to fragrances (caps necessary).  I can fall in love with a perfume and have to pass up on it because of the instant migraine it will induce. The face cream has a fresh citrusy scent that lingers for a little while and is not overwhelming at all for me, which makes me wish they made at least a body spray that smells like this stuff.

Instant gratification – My skin glows (I’m talking J. Lo status!) and feels smooth to the touch upon application.  The moisturizer was helpful in restoring my parched skin that was a result of the harsh winter we endured in NYC this year.

Packaging – the airtight packaging and built-in pump keeps germs from compromising the remaining product.  Maybe I am missing something here, but I do not understand why a face cream would not come with packaging that does not allow you to dip your hands right in.  Ever have a jar of face cream get all crusty on the sides? I have witnessed it and it is not pretty.  Maybe I am being a little dramatic here but maybe the one time you forgot to wash/sanitize your hands before getting into that jar was enough to start a small city of skin polluting microbes in your moisturizer.  These are the kind of things that keep me up at night (just kidding ha ha).  But the truth is that while there are many factors that go into why we break out – hormones, stress, using dirty makeup brushes, etc – a germy moisturizer may be the culprit you have not considered.  The eye treatment’s pump also doubles as an applicator that you can use to massage the area under the eye as you apply the product.

    Makeup Tutorial: Summer Romance

    7 Jun

    Summer Romance Makeup Tutorial

June is here, which means that wedding season is in full swing.  I wore the wedding-worthy look above in the haul video I filmed for The Makeup Show and so many of my viewers requested it that I had to give you a tutorial.

    Bridal adjustments

For a daytime ceremony, I would keep the eye liner thin and as close to the lash line as possible since I prefer a more natural look.  Right before an evening reception add another layer of liner and smoke it out as demonstrated in the video.  Speaking of liners, make sure to use a waterproof version unless you are going for Beyonce in the video for Why Don’t You Love Me?  P.S. You shouldn’t!  Just to be safe top the smoked out liner with a charcoal gray shadow for extra staying power and dimension.

This look would work for a guest as well and while we are at it, why limit this look to a wedding?  It would be a great look to keep in your arsenal for any other special occasion such as a birthday, prom or graduation party.
